| Welcome to ISITA |
Welcome, to ISITA--the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa, located at the Program of African Studies, Northwestern University. Inaugurated in January 2001, ISITA is the first research center in the United States specifically devoted to the study of African Islamic culture. Directed by Professors John O. Hunwick (History and Religion, Northwestern University), and Sean O'Fahey (History, University of Bergen, Norway), ISITA seeks to raise awareness of Africa's rich Islamic intellectual and literary heritage by encouraging collaboration and interaction between scholars and publishing works on African Islamic thought and the transmission of knowledge. The Ford Foundation has provided funding for ISITA's initial four years of programming.
